More Than A List of "Do's" and Don'ts"
Baha’is are urged to refrain from: backbiting, the oppression of any groups or individuals based on gender, race, or religion, and from engaging in conduct harmful to themselves or others. They are to abstain from judging others and to avoid unhealthy obsession with materialism. On the other hand, Baha’is ARE required to: work hard, embrace unity, harmony, and loving-kindness, while finding ways to serve others in order to advance civilization and help to create a unified world.
But the list--particularly of “don’ts”--are not totally descriptive of what it means to be a Baha’i! Baha’u’llah intended these social “laws” (or “don’ts”) to evolve with changing times and with new manifestations and dispensations; moreover, they are never intended to restrict personal freedom. Baha’u’llah tells us, “True liberty consists in man’s submission unto My commandments…Were men to willingly observe that which We have sent down unto them…they would attain perfect liberty.”
