What Is God?

The Unknowable Essence

It is impossible to know exactly “what God is.” A mortal can no more grasp the reality of God than a table can comprehend the essence of its creator. God is the “Unknowable Essence” and, from a Baha’i perspective, exalted above all human attributes.

The only way we can have a true sense of God is through His messengers.  At various times, He sends us a manifestation, such as Christ, Muhammed, Baha’u’llah, etc.  Such “prophets” represent God’s divine presence and transmit knowledge to humankind about who God is and His purpose for us. Each of these manifestations has told us that God is all-knowing, all-loving, and all-merciful.

We can also get a sense of God through His creation. Baha’u’llah says, “If we wish to come in touch with the reality of Divinity, we do so by recognizing its phenomena, its attributes and traces, which are widespread in the universe.”
