The Start of a Spiritual Evolution
When death occurs, the physical body returns to dust, yet the soul continues to progress in the spiritual world in an eternal journey towards perfection. The spiritual world is sublime, but as different from this world as the womb is for an embryo. The soul at the time of death is able to recognize the value of its deeds while on earth and begins a new phase: a relationship with God, as the soul undergoes its eternal spiritual evolution.
Baha’is are thus exhorted not to fear death because the spirit carries on! Baha’u’llah tells us that “…to hold that the spirit is annihilated upon the death of the body is to imagine a bird in a cage would perish if the cage were broken, though the bird has nothing to fear from the breaking of the cage.” Indeed, Baha’u’llah tells us to consider death purely as a “messenger of joy.”
