Why Do People Lose Faith?

Not The Easiest Path

There are myriad reasons why people walk away from their beliefs. However, in my experience, there are three main issues.

Often, the lifestyle is hard to follow. It is challenging, as most religions require, to be patient, kind, and forgiving in all situations. Moreover, if the religion has strict social laws, some decide it is easier to do whatever one wishes. Following the Baha’i Faith, for example, requires recognizing one’s insufficiency and surrendering to an authority greater than oneself.

In other cases, God is allowing one to stray to learn some important lessons and do some individual investigation of truth, but will be later called back into the fold (this happened to me!)

Finally, when bad things occur (why are there diseases that kill millions of children…or tsunamis?) some blame God and thus turn away.  It is difficult to trust that God has reasons we may never understand.
