Why Do We Attend or Not Attend Religious Services?

Spiritual Restoration

Baha’i religious services are held every nineteen days and are called “feasts.” Most Baha’is attend because, as Abdu’l-Baha states, the purpose of these gatherings is to “…foster comradeship and love…and to call God to mind and to supplicate Him with contrite heart, and… if the feast is held in the proper fashion, the friends will find themselves spiritually restored and endued with a power that is of this world.” I can personally attest to this power of feasts and believe this is why Baha’is do attend them regularly.

The reasons Baha’is sometimes do NOT attend may be similar to the reasons for non-attendance in other faiths:

  • The heavy responsibilities of working and raising children with two-income families

  • Traveling for business and pleasure which is becoming much more frequent

  • Media options to renew spirituality through podcasts, online readings, etc.

  • Self-directed spirituality. Some choose to pray and commune individually or with spouses
