Why Do We Suffer?

Everybody Suffers

Suffering is inherent to the human condition. Baha’is believe suffering comes to us for two main reasons---either as a consequence of our own actions, or as a test sent from God to enhance our spiritual development.

The suffering we bring upon ourselves is often physical; for example, when we eat too much and get a stomachache. Or it can be emotional, when we feel remorse for our own bad behavior. Following the laws of God frees us from both kinds of suffering.

Other suffering—travails with no apparent reason—develops our souls. The Baha’i Writings state that, “Everything in life ministers to our spiritual development…Tests are either stumbling blocks or stepping stones, just as we make them…those who suffer most attain the greatest perfection.”

Yet the most unspeakable suffering, such as afflicted children, is a test for all humanity. For such souls, there is recompense in the next world.
