Martyrdom of the Báb
On July 9, 1850, the Báb (which means Gate in Arabic, and is pronounced bŏb) made the ultimate sacrifice for humanity. During preparations of his execution, he was suspended with a young follower by ropes in the town square of Tabriz, Persia before a firing squad of 750 soldiers and a massive crowd of ten-thousand people. The first 750 bullets missed him! As the second regiment prepared to fire its volley, the Báb spoke his last words to the gazing multitude.
“O wayward generation!” Had you believed in Me every one of you would have followed the example of this youth, who stood in rank above most of you, and would have willingly sacrificed himself in My path.
